Harts Farm House

A Contemporary Interpretation of the Farmstead

Harts Farm House is a design proposal for a new contemporary home within the grounds of a Grade II listed farmhouse. Drawing inspiration from the site's agricultural heritage, the design reinterprets the simple forms and materials of traditional farm buildings to create a home that feels both contemporary and rooted in its rural setting.

Rather than competing with the historic buildings, the proposal adopts a restrained architectural language that complements the character of the farmstead while establishing its own identity.

Responding to Context

The long, low form of the house reflects the proportions of neighbouring agricultural buildings, allowing the new dwelling to sit comfortably within the existing group. Carefully positioned on the site, the building turns towards the landscape, creating private south-facing gardens while minimising its impact on neighbouring properties.

Openings are arranged to frame views of the surrounding countryside and maximise natural light, while maintaining privacy for both the new home and the existing farmhouse.

Materiality

A simple palette of timber, brick and fibre cement draws directly from the agricultural character of the site. Vertical timber cladding references the rhythm of traditional barn boarding, while the brick boundary wall echoes the materials found elsewhere within the farmstead and helps define the arrival sequence.

The restrained material palette allows the building to sit naturally within its landscape while expressing a distinctly contemporary architectural identity.

Sustainability

The proposal integrates a range of sustainable design measures, including a ground source heat pump, photovoltaic panels and a sedum roof to reduce environmental impact and improve biodiversity. Together with a highly insulated building envelope, these elements support a low-energy home designed for long-term performance.

Harts Farm House demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respond sensitively to a historic rural setting, creating a new home that respects its heritage while embracing modern design and sustainable living.
