Malone House

A Contemporary Extension Inspired by the Coast

Malone House is a contemporary extension to a family home in Warsash, Hampshire, designed to transform the way the house is used while drawing inspiration from its waterside setting. Working within the footprint of an existing conservatory, the design reimagines the rear of the property as a series of light-filled spaces that encourage family life, entertaining and a stronger connection with the garden.

Rather than increasing the scale of the house, the design focuses on improving the quality of the existing accommodation, creating a more open, flexible and contemporary home.

Connecting Family Life

At the heart of the extension is a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space designed around everyday family life. Large sliding doors and carefully positioned rooflights flood the interior with natural light, while strengthening the relationship between the house and the garden.

A distinctive rooflight wraps up and over the kitchen, creating a seamless connection between inside and out and drawing daylight deep into the centre of the home.

A Room Above the Garden

A sculptural spiral staircase leads to a secluded first-floor snug that appears as a contemporary garden pavilion above the extension below. Designed as a quiet retreat, the space projects towards the garden, where a deep bay window seat creates the perfect place to read, reflect and enjoy views across the surrounding landscape.

Carefully angled to respond to the proportions of the existing house and neighbouring properties, the upper-level addition introduces a contemporary architectural form while sitting comfortably within its residential setting.

Materiality

Corten steel defines the architectural identity of the extension, introducing a rich, weathering material that references the maritime character of Warsash. As the steel develops its natural patina over time, it creates a warm, textured façade that complements the tones of the existing brickwork while giving the addition a confident contemporary expression.

A sedum roof softens the single-storey extension when viewed from the upper floors of the house, extending the visual connection with the garden while enhancing biodiversity and reducing rainwater run-off.

The result is a carefully crafted extension that demonstrates how thoughtful design and a restrained material palette can transform an existing home without increasing its footprint.
